Stream of consciousness

Gone.
It’s the first word that crept into my mind. It’s the word that sticks, repeating itself over, and over and over again. Worming deep into every part of me. In the silence that follows the storm only one word can be found to describe it. No other words fit. There are no other words.

Just gone. All gone.
And I wonder what I must do now.  I have nothing. There is nothing. It is gone. If I have nothing, what does that make me? Do I become nothing?

I’m not dead, so I’m not important. I do not count in the toll of casualties. What does

Potato FamineDavid says it’s a punishment. He says God is angry and has chosen Ireland’s people to be punished. Mum hushes him when he talks like that. I see my family fading away and my friends disappear, I see how smiles no longer play around my mother’s eyes and I see the grim, haggard expression taking over my father’s face and I wonder why God is punishing the good. I wonder what God would sanction this. I don’t pray much anymore.
